January through March
There is available ice fishing on inland lakes, Van Ettan Lake, Tawas Bay and the AuSable River backwaters. Use Minnows, wax worms and wigglers for Pike, Perch, Blue Gills and Walleye.
March through May
This is peak Spring Steelhead fishing from the Foote Dam to the mouth of Lake Huron. Spawn bags, wax worms and wigglers work best fished from the shore or while wading.
Walleyes are on their post spawning feed on the lower River. Trolling and casting Rapalas at the AuSable River mouth works well. 10 lb. Walleye are not uncommon.
May and the rest of the Summer
Excellent Lake Trout fishing with spoons and flies in 50 to 100 ft. of water on Lake Huron.
Salmon start mid-summer and run through Labor Day on the lake, then move upriver into October. Spoons and J Plugs are the best Salmon bait.
November and December
Whitefish are spawning and fishing is good off the piers and lower River.
Steelhead make a Fall run, so fish spawn and wax worms from the River mouth to Foote Dam.
